  1. This is an audio recording of Carlos conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in a performance of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, in Orchestra Hall, Chicago, on October 12, 1978.

The CSO concerts of 12, 13, and 14 October 1978 comprise one of only two sets of orchestral concerts that Carlos ever conducted in the U.S. The other, also with the CSO, took place on 2, 3, and 4 June 1983, in the same venue.

This performance of Beethoven’s 5th is nothing less than spectacular. In my judgment it trumps the classic 1975 recording for DGG. Moreover, although only an audio recording, it is far more satisfying than what we see and hear in the only known video of Carlos conducting this piece. That performance was with the Wiener Philharmoniker, took place in Teatro Juarez, Guanajuato, Mexico, on April 27, 1981, and is accessible in this section of the site.

Warning: the coda of this performance is breathtakingly electric and propulsive. At its conclusion, the listener is at risk of involuntarily rising from her/his seat and starting to applaud and shout “bravo!”
